Successful heavy-metal reductions in vehicles
A study by the renowned Öko-Institut for applied ecology in Germany has found an almost 100% reduction of life cycle emissions of lead, cadmium and hexavalent chromium caused by vehicles. The study was presented during a seminar at ACEA in Brussels.
Auto makers develop tool to deploy pyrotechnic devices in vehicles
Auto makers have jointly developed a tool to easily, safely and most time and cost-efficiently deploy pyrotechnic devices in cars at their End-of-Life stage. The new tool was presented for the first time in Brussels, on 23 November 2010, with a demonstration on a number of cars.
Technical report on future Euro6 On-Board-Diagnostic requirements
Ricardo has published an independent report and assessment of information to support the necessary legislative process to confirm the future Euro 6 OBD thresholds. The capability of sensor technology and technology currently under development to achieve reliable and robust detection of failures at the Euro 6 OBD thresholds which have been proposed by the Commission, but which the Commission notes should be subject to impact assessment by September 2010, are assessed in the report.
Production: car makers reduce environmental impact
European auto manufacturers have significantly reduced the environmental impact of vehicle production in recent years. Per unit produced, energy consumption, CO2 emissions, waste, water use and VOC emissions have all decreased.
Cars, Trucks and the Environment
updated: Using limited resources responsibly and protecting our environment: these are probably the greatest assignments of society today. European automobile manufacturers have an important role to play.
Cancun: Automakers stress commitment to sustainable mobility
At the UN climate conference in Cancun, in December 2010, the European automobile manufacturers’ association ACEA has organised a dedicated side event within the official framework of side events hosted by the UN secretariat.

DOSSIER: AIR QUALITY
Improving Air Quality
Engine technologies and exhaust after-treatment systems have slashed pollutant emissions like particles and NOx from cars as well as busses, trucks and vans, boosting air quality in towns and cities.
DOSSIER: CO2 EMISSIONS
Reducing CO2 emissions
Climate change is a global challenge which demands collective action and international cooperation. The automotive sector is playing a leading role, embracing its responsibility to reduce CO2 emissions from products in-use and production sites.
DOSSIER: RECYCLING
Recycling of vehicles, a prime example of industry progress
Responsible manufacturers take a holistic view when considering opportunities to recycle and recover material at the end of a product’s life. This forms part of a sustainable manufacturing strategy and the car sector has embraced this cradle-to-grave approach.
DOSSIER: NOISE REDUCTION
NOISE REDUCTION - New Study Gives Insight In Costs And Benefits
Since 1970, four EU directives have been implemented to reduce vehicle noise levels, resulting in an overall reduction so far of 90%.
ACEA members support global solution for new refrigerants
The amended EU-wide rules for new vehicles, applicable since 1 January 2011 for new vehicle types, require all automobile manufacturers to use a refrigerant in their air-conditioning systems with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) lower than 150 in accordance with the Mobile Air Conditioning (MAC) Directive 2006/40/EC.
