November 4: Automotive Industry in the New EU Member States

The Permanent Representation of Romania to the EU and the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) jointly organise a special event on the automotive industry in the New EU Member States. The conference entitled “Competitiveness and Environment - Major Changes of Equal Priority” will take place on November 4 in the Permanent Representation of Romania to the EU in Brussels, Rue Montoyer 12. Its aim is to raise awareness about the importance of the automotive sector in Europe. The New EU Member States host 17% of EU car production and this share is growing.
Confirmed speakers include the European Commissioner for Enterprise and Industry Günter Verheugen, Commissioner for Multilingualism Leonard Orban, Czech Deputy Minister for the Environment Aleš Kuták and further high-level representatives of European institutions, New Member States and the automotive industry.
The automotive industry is the engine of the European economy in terms of investments, employment level, R&D expenditure, state revenue and export. To retain this strength, EU governments and the European vehicle industry have to work together. With overall economic circumstances currently deteriorating sharply it is all the more important to ensure a supportive regulatory framework, in particular concerning environmental requirements that typically involve high levels of investment over a longer period of time. Governments can help sustain Research & Development programmes and take action to boost consumer confidence and renew the EU car fleet. The new member governments’ support for a holistic way of policy making in Brussels is truly essential in this context.
