Sergio Marchionne Re-elected President of ACEA
Brussels, 11 January 2007
Sergio Marchionne Re-elected President of ACEA
The Board of Directors of ACEA, the European Automobile Manufactures Association, has re-elected Sergio Marchionne as president for 2007. Marchionne is CEO of FIAT Group, Turin. The ACEA Board consists of all CEOs of the thirteen member companies of the Brussels based association.
??I am honoured to be president of ACEA for another year?, Marchionne said. ??These are crucial times for the European automotive industry. The overarching challenge is keeping the industry competitive. It is essential that the recommendations of the High-level Group CARS21 to improve the regulatory framework in Europe while improving further the safety on our roads and protecting the environment are respected.?
CARS 21, a multi-stakeholder forum of European Commissioners, national Ministers, CEOs and consumer representatives, concluded its report in December 2005. The European Commission is expected to send a communication on its implementation to the Council and the European Parliament this month.
??CARS 21 was a recognition long due for the fact that regulation impacts our competitiveness directly. We need a swift adoption of the recommended ??better regulation? principles, including proper and transparent impact assessments and cost-effectiveness analysis before legislative proposals are made?, said Marchionne. ??Similarly, we ask EU legislators to commit to the recommended Integrated Approach to safety and CO2-emission reductions from passenger cars. This means combining efforts of all relevant parties: the car industry, the fuel industry, policy makers and drivers, in order to achieve the progress society wants.?
ACEA represents the thirteen major European car, truck and bus manufacturers. They produce 18 million vehicles per year, provide direct employment to 2 million people and support the jobs of another 10 million workers. Members are: BMW Group, DAF Trucks, DaimlerChrysler, FIAT, Ford of Europe, General Motors Europe, MAN Nutzfahrzeuge, Porsche, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Renault, Scania, Volkswagen and Volvo Trucks.
