US moves towards introduction of fleet renewal scheme
Under the plan, agreed and announced by key members of the US Congress, consumers could receive funding when they trade in their old vehicle for a new, more fuel-efficient one. Depending on the gain in fuel efficiency, the government support would amount to US$3 500 or US$4 500.
If adopted, the scheme will last one year and provide enough funding for about one million car or light truck purchases. According to the Financial Times, both US and foreign vehicles will be eligible for the funding, regardless of where they have been produced.
The table below summarises the planned conditions.
