ACEA biofuel statement

Biofuels are foreseen to be a necessary part of the EU’s renewable energy strategy that is presently being debated in Brussels as a means to reduce CO2 emissions and ease concerns on security of supply.

ACEA’s view in the biofuels statement is that so called ‘first generation’ biofuels coming from products such as corn (e.g. ethanol blended with petrol) and vegetable oils (e.g. FAME blended with diesel) remain viable pathways pending EU agreement of sustainability criteria and addressing a number of technical concerns to ensure market fuels that are ‘fit for purpose’.

ACEA commits to E10 and B7 fuels in the short-term. However, the longer term must be addressed through policy intervention now that encourages and stimulates investment in ‘second generation’ biofuel production pathways
