Auto makers support the “Decade of Action for Road Safety”
Brussels, 9 May 2011—The World Health Organisation will launch, on May 11 the ‘Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020’, an international campaign to promote road safety world wide.

An overall ‘Global Plan’ will provide a framework for various activities taking place in the context of the “Decade”, covering areas such as the building of road safety management capacity; the improvement of the safety of road infrastructure and broader transport networks; the further development of the safety of vehicles; the enhancement of the behaviour of road users; and the improvement of post-crash care.
The launch means the start of a Decade of action to save 5 million lives. All over the world, road safety awareness events will take place involving public institutions to private companies and associations, with activities reaching from the handing out of flyers and promotional material, to having stands on the marketplace with information and holding competitions with prizes.
Road safety is a prime area of innovation and development for the European automobile manufacturers, and they fully support this important campaign. ACEA, the automobile manufacturers’ trade association, has recently initiated the youth project ‘Our Future Mobility Now’, to challenge young adults to explore the future of mobility and transportation, and help shape developments in this important area of their lives and careers. ACEA has also recently renewed its signature to the EU Road Safety Charter, an initiative launched by the European Commission to halve road fatalities by 2020.
